Meeting Summary for Wednesday 5 January 2011, present; Cathy, Cas and Jenny.
Following Wendy Harmers excellent advice, we ditched all hopes of ever setting and sticking any New Year’s resolution and instead concentrated on being happier! J Thanks Cathy for bringing this brilliant gem of insight and humour.
While New Year’s resolutions are so much alcohol inspired codswallop, goal setting is not. Discussing our goals leads down the garden path to Purpose. And what a Pandora’s box that turns out to be....
Setting goals without Purpose is like sailing without a rudder. It’s all very well to set sail and lose sight of the shore, but you better bloody well have a compass.
What great insights to share. Having 3 people at 3 different stages of developing a Life purpose was really interesting. Cas (sanctimonious so-&-so) had a Purpose developed at Anthony Robbin’s “Date with Destiny” conference in 2007, Cathy was developing one, and Jenny was fascinated.
Cas shared her purpose - to use my unlimited love and boundless enthusiasm and creativity, to move, awaken and open people to the possibilities within themselves and this amazing world and be an agent for positive change.
Cathy had categorised purposes in each life balance area, a great start to crystalise into words that hopefully make the heart sing!
Cathy’s Purpose is still in the ruminating stage.... you need to sit with the words and make sure they resonate and ring true...wear them a while and see if they sit comfortably...
To continually grow and learn and use my love to connect and contribute, giving freely to those in need, enjoying life – latte style – with family and friends.
Discussing Purpose, it’s important not to overly intellectualise the process. Connecting to the heart is essential (but so hard!) because the Purpose is an emotional driver.
Jenny had some excellent Goals..... Less Process driven, less road rage! More being in the moment.... more kindness to others and small gestures...a beautiful story about a flower and kind words never realised to a woman who later committed suicide.
A day is chunked into blocks of time for BHAGs, and the night before, a few minutes of planning looking at what will bring the best results, with flexibility added for children, unexpected moments, spontaneity and serendipity. Cas has renamed To Do’s to Ta Da’s and looks at these last, reclaiming her life from the tyranny of endless to-do lists by chunking. .
The “Time Lord” goal is to review daily, weekly, quarterly and annually, ensuring the process keeps pushing delivery of life purpose in the real world with real results the ultimate (ruthless reality) feedback. Still working on making the “Time Lord” reality match the vision on this one!
Journaling, meditation, contemplation, consideration, reflection and prayer all serve as feedback mechanisms between dreaming and doing.... to create results aligned with visions. The challenge is incorporating this into real life, dirty dishes, school camps, matching socks, filing receipts, tax returns, etc! It is possible but it takes a willingness to change and time.
A discussion of what really matters, junk on the kerbside or a life time of treasured possessions and curtains was amusing and insightful!
What are the conditions for your happiness? Is it hard to be happy and easy to be sad? Or is it easy to be happy and hard to be sad; it depends on the rules you have.
Remembering the map is not the reality, what is your blueprint? How much is open to negotiation, how much is NOT negotiable and how much resistance vs acceptance is built into these beliefs systems (BS) bullshit.
Balancing our needs for living with “what is” and creating change to “what is possible”, is like a see saw, like trying to walk along a straight line. It requires constant adjustment and re-evaluation, growth, learning and wisdom! J That’s the fun of the journey I suppose.
The Indian food was delicious, the service attentive and the restuarnt quiet enough to hold a decent conversation....Despite a memorable summer storm of hail and torrential rain to start the evening we talked passionately for 3.5hrs about this stuff! Definitely a subject we can revisit...
