Get Inspired.... Watch Jacqueline Novogratz

We each want to live a life of purpose, but where to start? In this luminous, wide-ranging talk, Jacqueline Novogratz introduces us to people she's met in her work in "patient capital" -- people who have immersed themselves in a cause, a community, a passion for justice. These human stories carry powerful moments of inspiration.

Why you should listen to her:

One of the most innovative players shaping philanthropy today, Jacqueline Novogratz is redefining the way problems of poverty can be solved around the world. Drawing on her past experience in banking, microfinance and traditional philanthropy, Novogratz has become a leading proponent for financing entrepreneurs and enterprises that can bring affordable clean water, housing and healthcare to poor people so that they no longer have to depend on the disappointing results and lack of accountability seen in traditional charity and old-fashioned aid.

The Acumen Fund, which she founded in 2001, has an ambitious plan: to create a blueprint for alleviating poverty using market-oriented approaches. Indeed, Acumen has more in common with a venture capital fund than a typical nonprofit. Rather than handing out grants, Acumen invests in fledgling companies and organizations that bring critical -- often life-altering -- products and services to the world's poor. Like VCs, Acumen offers not just money, but also infrastructure and management expertise. From drip-irrigation systems in India to malaria-preventing bed nets in Tanzania to a low-cost mortgage program in Pakistan, Acumen's portfolio offers important case studies for entrepreneurial efforts aimed at the vastly underserved market of those making less than $4/day.

It's a fascinating model that's shaken up philanthropy and investment communities alike. Acumen Fund manages more than $20 million in investments aimed at serving the poor. And most of their projects deliver stunning, inspiring results. Their success can be traced back to Novogratz herself, who possesses that rarest combination of business savvy and cultural sensitivity. In addition to seeking out sound business models, she places great importance on identifying solutions from within communities rather than imposing them from the outside. “People don't want handouts," Novogratz said at TEDGlobal 2005. "They want to make their own decisions, to solve their own problems.”

In her new book, The Blue Sweater, she tells stories from the new philanthropy, which emphasizes
sustainable bottom-up solutions over traditional top-down aid.
"Acumen Fund is a not-for-profit group (but not a charity) that is supported by investors (not donors) who want a good “social return” on their capital."

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
This inspiring quote by Marianne Williamson is from her book, A Return To Love: Reflections on the Principles of A Course in Miracles, Harper Collins, 1992. From Chapter 7, Section 3 (Pg. 190-191). Famously pinched by a speech writer for Nelson Mandela's inaugral speech. I guess you can't be too fussed about copyright when famous people use your words! Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.

Love the Life You Live - Anne Hartley
Ten steps for happier Living - a life coaching process
I found this book very useful. Written by an Autralian woman whose life's trials include the death of her toddler son in a fall, divorce and financial ruin she is well qualified to talk about finding your way back to happiness after the depths of despair.
"I learnt from my son's death that I had choices. How I allowed this event to shape my life was up to me. I chose to grow through the experience."
The 10 steps are the bones of any self development/awareness journey and supported nicely by her own stories...
1. Break free from the influence of the tribe
2. Know who you want to be
3. Choose what makes you happy
4. You create your life with your thoughts, words actions
5. Face your Fears
6. Create from Within
7. Success lies in your Daily habits
8. Allow no doubt
9. Love and respect yourself
10.You can have everything you want when you don't need it

I bought 5 of these books and gave them to all my firends and I re-read it often because I'm forgettful and it contains such sensible, practical advice that has daily application. Cas

Being in Balance - Dr Wayne Dyer
9 Principles for Creating Habits to match your Desires
"One of the huge imbalances in Life is the disparity between your daily existnce, with it's routines and habits, and the dream you have deep within yourself of some extraordinarily satisfying way to living." So opens Dr Dyer's book. Nailing it in a nutshell..... ha.... our deepest desires and their realisation against the background of washing dishes, going to work and matching socks.
This book has a rather dreamy style of writing and sometimes I had to labour to understand the meaning. But it contains the wisdom of ages and I pulled powerful insights from its pages. This was a book my mother-in-law asked to borrow! It contains such a rich vastness of information that again, it should be re-read often. It is one of those books where the message is different every time you read it because you are in a different place and able to understand a new level....  Dyer is one the guru's of the self development industry with a vast following and collection of material. This is a small book, packed with wise words and a nice way to start getting to know Dyer's take on life.

He'll be Ok - Celia Lashlie
Growing Good Boys into Goregeous Men
How do you raise boys to men in a world where trouble beckons at every turn? How do you make sure they learn the ′right′ lessons, stay out of danger, find a path to follow? How do you ensure they′ll be OK?

Author Celia Lashlie has some of the answers. After years working in the prison service, she knows what can happen when boys make the wrong choices. She also knows what it′s like to be a parent - she raised a son on her own and feared for his survival. As a crucial part of the NZ Good Man Project, she talked to 180 classes of boys throughout the country. Her insights into what boys need - and what parents can do to help them - are ground-breaking.

In this honest, no-nonsense and best-selling book, Celia Lashlie reveals what goes on inside the world of boys, and that it is an entirely different world from that of girls. With clarity and insight, she offers parents - especially mothers - practical and reassuring advice on raising their boys to become good, loving, articulate men.

I liked this book for one take home insight "Back off Mum!" When boys get to adolescence it's time for Dad to take them over the bridge to manhood.  No a job a woman can do, we lack the equipment girls and the masculine energy. We need to step back (but still be there) and allow men to step up. Following this advice, I consciously have made room in my life for my boys and Dad to make their way without feminine interference, appreciating the masculine energy and what it can bring has been a blessing. Rather than diminishing my role, it has enhanced my feminine power. Very interesting. Of course, I am blessed to have a man who has stepped up....Thanks Andrew (aka Dad)    Great book for Mums and Dads of Boys. Was lucky to see Laslie talking in Canberra in 2009, and she is very funny too! in a sort of "too-close-to-the-bone" way!

The Invitation - Oriah.
A poem that became a cult. A simple poem, writen post party expressing the frustration of our superficial conversations, created a cult following that inspired a book. The first page had me in tears as Oriah goes from serene meditation to a post shower teenage bathroom.
"This is the reality we live: aspiring to be at our best, longing for and sometimes finding meaning and connection within ourselves and that which is larger than ourselves, we are undone by messy bathrooms, traffic jams and burnt toast. I am not interested in a spirituality that does not encompass my humanness."
